8. Quantum Computation and Quantum Information

Workshop organized by:  D. Ellinas and J. Pachos

Quantum Computation and Quantum Information

This workshop will focus on various aspects of Quantum Computation (quantum algorithms for computation and communication; aspects of statistical physics, mathematical problems, performance and complexity questions), and of Quantum Information (quantum measurements questions, classical versus quantum information, quantum multi-particle entanglement, topological considerations, quantum information on graphs, lattices and networks).
The workshop in particular will focus on various types of quantum walks, ranging from their topological versions to their classical counterparts. Quantum walks is a generic name for a large class of procedures or protocols that mimic the conditional behavior of classical random walks within the framework of quantum mechanics. An immediate aim of this effort is the discovery of news modes of statistical performance of quantum walks (QW) in comparison with those of their classical counterparts. Applications of these novel performances span a wide range of topics in the area of Quantum Computation and Quantum Information Science and Technology (QCQIST). This research program, lunched about fifteen years ago, has been fruitfully developed along some main directions that refer to: its mathematical formalism (e.g. QW in graphs, lattices, networks, CP maps and unitary dilations, topological QW for (non)abelian anyons, braid group, quantum doubles); its achievement of novel results (e.g. speed up diffusion rates, missing times, hitting times, improving complexity figures of merit); its applications (in entanglement and decoherence studies, in quantum algorithms, in coherent transportation, in state transfer, in quantum dynamics; in photosynthetic light harvesting); its physical implementations (of topological QW in optical lattices, in condensed matter systems, in linear-optics systems).

Contributions to this workshop should present new and important results, concerning any of the outlined general and focusing directions. Thorough reviews for various parts of the subject will also be welcome. The purpose of the workshop is to communicate novel ideas and to explore new research paths in the broader interface of fields of Statistical Physics and QCQIST.
